Introduction: In class we are researching and analyzing the structure of the magazine and its double page spread. Double page spread can be more than two pages.

- What is the double page spread?

A spread consists of two opposing pages, one on the left and one on the right. The two pages of an open publication are covered by two pages of the same article.

For this research I went to the local shop and found some fashion magazines. For each one of them I took pictures of the magazine cover, the table of contents, and the double page spread itself.

Magazine #1

Main Cover

  • the main image is a model whose name is 'Kaia Gerber'.

Table of Contents

  • the article that I chose is about the main cover. It's called "Kaia Gerber takes a breath".

Double Page Spread

_____________________________________________________________________

Headline: "Kaia Gerber takes a breath". On the first page, there is a little introduction at the top. It says: "Debut at 16. Now, at 21, the supermodel is entering a new character, complete with a budding acting career and a new perspective of life". Refers to the headline 'takes a breath', meaning changes in the person's life.

Section Title: "Fashion"

Pull Quote: "My personal life and my mental health are not something I'm willing to sacrifice for my job ever again". It is the only quote of the article and it's placed at the top of the page, catching the attention of the audience.

Number of Columns Per Page: 2

Total number of images (in the article): 2

-in both pictures Kaia Gerber is represented. First image is black and white - monochrome photography. Monochrome photography may make surrounding images appear less dominant than the central subject by limiting all colors to varying shades of the same color. Photographer is making a focus on her face. Second picture has more color. The scene and settings are different. Model's full body is captured. Her outfit represents the American flag. Each of the images take the whole page space.

Total number of pages (in the article): 4

House Style

- Article starts with big letters, name of the person being interviewed, to show where the article starts and to catch attention. Use of both, Sans Serif and Serif. Serif is used for the main article text and lines with Italic font, while Sans Serif is big headlines or quotes. Same use of fonts is used in TOC and magazine cover. Title of the magazine is Serif, cover lines are Sans Serif, while in TOC, sections are in San Serif and little description are in Serif. Color scheme is black and white colors, showing calmness and neutrality. Third page also adds colors red and blue, creating a casual mood, because of the image.

Content

- The interview in which Kaia discussed how modeling broadened her horizons provided the basis for the article. She first found success in modeling, but nowadays she works on acting ventures. She continues to be really herself, though. She discusses in the interview how modeling offered her the chance to travel and taught her a lot at an early age. It also helped her to fight over her ‘high school’ nervous and shy girl and open up. She also highlights the people she met along the way and her gratitude for what she has. She also discusses modeling rejections in the interview, saying that it's acceptable since they didn't reject anything about your personality. She doesn't get offended by it. She also discusses how people could misinterpret her demeanor despite the fact that she is a genuinely funny person who adores comedy.

Magazine #2

Main Cover

  • Erykah Badu is the main model on the magazine cover.

Table of Contents

  • The article I chose is called "Into the Mystic" and is about Erykah Badu.

Double Page Spread

Headline: "Into the Mystic". On the first page of the article a little introduction about Badu and her struggles.

Section Title: Fashion

Pull Quote: Placed in the middle of the fifth page, brings attention to the audience, because it looks outlined.

Total number of images (in the article): 4

- All of them include model - Erykah Badu. In two of them, however, also her 18 year older is present. Photoshoot of two of them is black and white - monochrome photography. It brings the deepness of the meaning and focus towards the models. On other photoshoots, only Badu is present, showing her fashion style. These pictures are in color.

Total number of pages (in the article): 6

House Style

- Mainly use of Serif font for the text, quotes and titles. It is a little different in TOC and magazine cover. Magazine cover uses Serif only for its title, while Sans is used for coverlines. In TOC its similar, Serif for title and subtitle, Sans for the main topic and their descriptions. Color scheme of the DPS is black, white, blue, red and beige. Similar color scheme in the magazine cover, also has the same location from photo shoots as in the article. Article starts with big letters, name of the person being interviewed, to show where the article starts and to catch attention.

Content

- Erykah enjoys wearing clothes that make sound while she walks, such as bells fastened to her ankles, since she loves both music and fashion. Article talks about her early years and how she was aware of the sounds around her. She was brought up and schooled by female family members. If you saw her then, you would have believed she discovered her clothes while searching through a donation bag in the church basement, according to her mother, who recalls her wearing crazy clothing as a little child. Yet as she got older, she started to set trends. According to her perspective, sharing her experiences with others benefits them. People can feel her energy, which makes her feel like a midwife. She also discusses her difficulties raising Puma, her daughter who is now 18 years old.

Magazine #3

Main Cover

  • Magazine's title 'Design District', person that article is going to be is 'Virgil Abloh'.

Table of Contents

  • The article that I will focus on is 'The Best of DM/BX'.

Double Page Spread

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

Headline: "The Wonderful World of Virgil Abloh", followed with little description of the event.

Section Title: Fashion

Pull Quote: Whole double page is made for a quote and placed on the left side taking about 1/2 of a page.

Number of Columns Per Page: 1

Total number of images (in the article): about 9 pages which can be seen fully

- all these images are placed in collage. All of them were taken during a fashion show. Therefore, the background is the same, but every outfit is uniquely different.

Total number of pages (in the article): 8

House Style

- Article is in the form of an interview, therefore organized in a 'question, then answer' way. Use of both, Sans Serif and Serif. Serif is mainly used with bold text, while other texts are in Sans. Color scheme: black, white, blue. These are the main colors used in the texts and background, meanwhile the photos were abstract outfits with a variety of colors. However, every picture of Virgil Abloh himself is monochrome.

Content

- Abloh discusses a variety of topics, including the situation of men's clothing, his passion for Chicago's rave scene, the opening of the Louis Vuitton Men's store in the Miami Design District, and much more. The primary source of Abloh's runway fashion inspiration is rave cultures. News about the new collection: it's rife with allusions to popular culture, musical genres, and vintage clothing. According to Abloh, these collections are rich in background and discourse. The new businesses in Miami's design district will carry the new collection.

Other Double Page Spreads that appeal to me

This one is one of my favorites for its layout and designs. The images are placed on the top, article starts on the bottom right, and bottom left is a coverline. I like the idea of putting outfits and the main color of the product that the audience should focus on.

I also like the layout of this magazine, even though it can be seen very basic it still works pretty good. I like the color scheme, and the accent on the lipstick that it brings. Quote in the middle catches the attention of the audience.

When I look at this double page spread I get inspired. The layout is made in a collage way, pictures are being placed on top of each other. Personally for me, it creates a look of a teen girl's diary. Color scheme adds up to the whole picture.
